Success and Failure: Afghanistan’s Efforts to Eradicate Poppy Cultivation

Paul Fishstein and David Mansfield presented findings from recently published AREU case studies concerning opium cultivation in the provinces of Balkh and Badakhshan, and Helmand and Nangarharrespectively. Development practitioners, UN agencies, and representatives from relevant ministries were present at the roundtable. The objective of the presentation was to engage with stakeholders on the contexts in which opium is cultivated, so as to have a grounded discussion on its impact on the economy, security, and impending inteqal.
