In order to address the issues of Trafficking in Persons in Afghanistan, the United States Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (J/TIP) has selected the Security Governance Group (SGG) based in Canada, to lead a three-year project to generate a sustainable Afghan capacity to provide training to security and justice personnel on the problem of trafficking in persons within Afghanistan. The project’s most tangible output will be an Afghan-developed, two-day issue-specific training curriculum on trafficking in persons. The two-day training course, developed in conjunction with our Afghan partners, will be made available as a module to be added to training courses for Afghan police officials,judicial officials, and personnel from the Ministry of Interior. However, the course’s key beneficiaries will be members of the Afghan Border Police, the Afghan National Police, the Ministry of Interior’s Trafficking in Persons Unit,the Ministry of Justice, Attorney General’s Office and other members of the Afghan judiciary. SGG is currently collaborating with AREU as its implementing partner on the ground in Afghanistan for the purposes of this project. AREU will conduct a mapping study with fieldwork(outside of Kabul) that will provide an overview of the problem of human trafficking in the Afghan context and the various initiatives launched to address it. The study will form the foundation for the subsequent curriculum development work.
